Teens and Breastfeeding

on April 13, 2015

Teen mothers face many pressures both from themselves and from society. Very often they or those around them doubt their ability to breastfeed either from a physical standpoint or from concern about their ability to commit to making it work.

Some facts may be helpful:

  • If a teenager’s body is capable of getting pregnant and carrying the pregnancy to term then her body has also matured enough to support breastfeeding.
  • Teens are still growing themselves. Breastfeeding teens will need to eat more than older mothers to support their own growth and that of their breastfeeding baby.
  • Teens need more sleep than adults to support their own growth. Learning to breastfeed lying down can make a huge difference to a teen mother’s ability to meet her own sleep needs and her baby’s feeding needs.
  • Breastfeeding is natural but it isn’t always easy no matter what mum’s age is. Teens need access to good information about breastfeeding and support through the early weeks so they don’t give up before they get to the stage when breastfeeding becomes easier. They may need help making connections to breastfeeding support systems as asking for help can be difficult for teens.
