Breastfeeding Resources in Arabic

on January 4, 2016

As Canada welcomes Syrian families, many of whom have young children or who may have children within the next few years, those who support breastfeeding families formally and informally need to be prepared with resource materials in Arabic.  These will be especially important for Syrian families who move to communities without other Arabic speaking families or health care professionals.

Here are some links to good breastfeeding resource materials that are available for free on the internet.  Some of these resources are available in both English and Arabic which makes it easier for the breastfeeding supporter to choose appropriate materials for the mother’s needs.

  • Why does my baby cry?  Information sheet from La Leche League Canada (English version available for reference).
  • Best Start/Health Nexus: an Ontario government website has a variety of resources on pregnancy, parenting and breastfeeding is several languages including Arabic (English versions are available).
  • Unicef Arabic breastfeeding information

Mothering Journey

Reading about breastfeeding is one way to gain information but the best learning is done in the company of others.  The presence and support of those who have shared experience can transcend language barriers.  If you are a breastfeeding supporter for a new immigrant, consider taking her to a La Leche League meeting, even if her English language skills are limited.  Babies and breastfeeding are universal.

Contact a La Leche League Leader for information about local meetings and breastfeeding resources.
If you need more information or have a breastfeeding problem or concern, you are strongly encouraged to talk directly to an accredited La Leche League Leader.  In Canada, Leaders can be located by clicking or Internationally

If you have found this article helpful, La Leche League Canada would appreciate your support in the form of a donation at so we can continue to help others breastfeed. Thank you!
